I was just wondering if some of the more experienced guys and girls out there could offer some advice on bike training.
With the weather as it is I am getting worried about how little cycling I am doing! I am doing some spinning and trying to do a few hours on the turbo trainer but I just dont know if thats enough. Can someone post a weekly cycle training plan that they think would be enough?
This is what I am doing (just for the cycling):
Spinning 2 times a week for an hour (hard to v hard). Cycling to work and back every day (30 min each way - medium to hard) on mountain bike (due to mountains of snow!). I also try to do between 1 and 2 hours on a turbo trainer on my bike on the weekend. When the weather gets better I plan to throw in a 3 hour ride on my TT bike one morning of the week.

Please post help....
thanks
worried first timer!

don't worry, once the snow clears and the spring/summer finally get here you should still have plenty of time to get in some long bike rides.

instead of worrying that you aren't getting enough miles on the bike then focus on something else like getting your run and swimming into great shape and then add the bike part later

Thanks for the reply Felix. Am trying hard not to worry! I guess I am just worried about the cycling as I see this could be the best part of the race to set a could pace (if possible) but also important to keep enough reserves for the small matter of the 42k run at the end! I just want to learn how to know what that "best" pace is. I dont expect someone to be able to tell me that as I guess its just experience but its always really nice to know what people with that experience think about how to prepare.

Many thanks
Johan

Hi,
I wouldn't worry to much at the moment about the cycling. I competed in IM UK in 2007 and didn't have a turbo trainer therefore only really managed to get out on Sundays for long rides the course was hilly but I didn't have any real problems with the amount of training I managed to get in. That said if I understand your post correctly you have a turbo, therefore are in a much better position, I bought a turbo in 2008 and am now using it mainly for my training during week days. I would suggest if you cannot get out due to weather condition just make sure you use the turbo. Using this will give you a much better controlled workout than just going out on the roads.

For what it's worth I would continue to use the turbo during the week keeping within your heart rate zone 2 this is completely controlable on the turbo and save the weekend (sat or sun) for a longer ride. At the moment I am only doing a maximum of 4 hours bike turbo and sunday ride, this will increase after my first 10 week block then on the second 10 week block will increase to between 5 and 8 hours per week, then the next 8 weeks increasing to a maximum of 10 hours per week this will then allow for 2 weeks tapper. Don't forget you need to balance running and swimming into the training and therefore not overdo the bike.

In my opinion it is more important to get the training levels right and within the correct zone to ensure you increase your arobic ability if you take care of this you will naturally increase in speed and also help to reduce the risk of injury.

Hope some of the above helps all the best with the training Dave

Hi and thanks very much for the reply. Sounds like good advice to me. I just worry that the turbo trainer isn't the same as road riding but by the sounds of what I am hearing that isn't too much of a problem. Ill keep turboing while the weather is rubbish (which it really is and it doesn't look to be changing anytime soon!).
Thanks again.

Obviously also depends on ýour ambition. If what's worrying you is to complete CP - I'm sure you'll be fine, once the weather gets better and you still have some 5 months B-)

Looks like the DK weather is gonna suck for another while though ! Consider throwing in some double or even triple spinning classes. Or the turbo and a whole season of "LOST" or whatever turns you on.

Of course going abroad to warmer conditions is highly recommendable if possible. You're most welcome here in Barcelona - we're enjoying 19 degrees today (how unfair of my to flash this). There's plenty of dry road and mountains to get those legs going for many hours !!!

Best of luck - Thomas

Thanks Thomas for letting me know how nice and warm you are ;) cycled to work in -5c again this morning!:blue:

I'm going away for a week to Mallorca with 50 Danish cyclists to spend 1 week cycle training at the end of April. The idea of hot sunshine (not just bright like here!) and hills, bikes and no distractions like work and family were just too much to say no to!

Am going to dig out the old 'Band of Brothers' DVDs and try to put some hours in on the Turbo Trainer...I like the idea of the multiple spinning classes too, hadn't thought of that. Thanks.

My aim is to just finish the Challenge but deep down I know that I would be very very pleased and smug if I could do it in less than 12 hours (1.5 swim, 6 to 6.5 cycle and 4 to 4.5 run).....Please please dont be a windy day......:-3
