Hi!
I wonder how much there is elevation in the bike course and how steep % are the most difficult parts of the route?
It is difficult to see from the profile view shown in the info.

Thanks, Juha

Hello,
According to my GPS the total elevation gain on the 180km course is about 550metres. Most of this is on rolling hills.
There are no serious climbs, the most significant hill (which you go over twice) I would say is 300-400 metres at about 5% (Other locals, Geels Bakke isn't much more than that, is it?).

At least for me (a good cyclist, but also touching on 90kg) there's nowhere on the course where you need to sit and "climb" in tiny gears or stand up to grind the bike over the top. You might find one of those methods faster or more economic, but you CAN ride your bike all the way around the course only getting out of the aero bars for the turns (and the cobbles in Lyngby, but that's another story).

I'd say Geels bakke is 500-600m long, with a climb of 28m positive (72m ASL)

I guess the 550m total climb is as flat as you'd ever get a 180km circuit !!!

TIP
Hi,

Back in March I posted this link: http://www.gpsies.com/map.do?fileId=buhnlrynyuzllmnk

Where the bike route can be seen and is downloadable for GPS etc.

If you look below the map there's a graph showing the topography along the bike route. It doesn't give you the % on hills but it gives you the hight (ASL) and a general idea of the hills on the bike course. It also shows you were along the route the hills are.

I have ridden the route lots of times now and can tell you there are no "big" climbes. I dont think its flat though either. It seems to be constant rolling hills. I guess for strong cyclists this may seem flat but for Mr average its not :) The slight gradients do seem to drain the watts from my legs after enough of them!
Great route! great scenery and some very fast sections.
If you have never ridden it before it would be worth taking a good look at the map as there are a few dodgy sharp turns which can take you by suprise!

Over 180k my garmin tells me that I have climbed 600 vertical meters, its a shame it cant tell me how strong the headwind was!!

The first part along the coastline is flat and fast, unless the wind is in the usual north western corner.

Once you leave the coast it's my favorite b-roads with sweeping hills and turns, very scenic and never a dull moment.

From Kongevejen north of Birkerød it's a straight road back to Copenhagen - long hills, but nothing too bad - as mentioned the peak is Geels Bakke, which is also the finish line for the UCI road racing World Championship 2011.

Why the route has to go through the treacherous cobblestones of Lyngby I have no idea - will just have to hope that it stays dry.

Don't worry about the cobbles - it's Champs Elysees, not Arenberg Forest. And importantly, there are NO turns on them, just straight through!

Anybody got an idea of the distance to where the cobbled section is in Lyngby from the start and how long the cobbled section is? Be good to know for a heads-up as living in London my first ride of the course will be on race day (possibly could have planned that better) ^_^

Hi,

It comes after about 85km and again after 161km. 2-3 km after the 3rd aid station (on top of a hill) you' ll see signs that you're approaching/entering Lyngby or Kgs. Lyngby. Then there's a tiny roundabout just at the beginning of the cobbled road, so you'll likely be awake at this point anyway.

The road in question is just over 500m in total. I wouldn't worry about it too much; it's a dead straight, neatly cobbled high street. I ride it everyday of the year to and from work (i.e. now up to about 300 passages this year) and have never had any incidents, despite rain, snow, and other kinds of nastiness.

TIP: You can open the Google street view and see the cobbled section beforehand!! B-)

OscarH is right, cobbles are not an issue, just make sure your bottles are secure! but if they arent that wont be a problem by that part of the course any, they would be long gone ;D
Have a great race
