Dear Challenge Cph

I remember I wrote my expected finishing time when signing up for the race. What is this information for? Are the starting time for each triathlete decided from the expected finishing time?

Dear ChallengeCPH,

Just an add-on question to the above. Is it possible to change ones expected finish time? Because the expected finish time I wrote last year is not the one I would write if asked today.

You can change your data by using the link you got fromUltimate Sport Service.
There will be wave starts starting at 7:30 am, starting every 5th minute with about 400 starters. The last group will be the relay starters.

Kind regards Michael

This still doesn't answer the question about what the expected finishing time is used for.
Until we know how the start groups are divided, we don't know if it's beneficial or not to change the data.

There could be several objectives:
a) wanting the field to spread out as much as possible to avoid drafting
b) starting people with similar expected times together, so they can race each other

However, either of those objectives would be difficult to meet basing the group selection only on people's predicted times, as both individual judgement and swimming ability may differ vastly.

The waves will be in the AG as far as I understand

Fair enough. But that then means the "predicted finishing time" isn't used for anything, so people can stop worrying about changing it?

Startwaves will be started in acording to AG, expected finishtime isn´t used for anything..

this is my experience from other races anyway.. so you can stop worrying about that :-) Also, the organizers will, for sure, tell us more details as august moves closer.

Dear all

Just to clear things up a bit :-)

The start groups will be divided according to expected finishing time.

7.00 pro fiels
Close there after slow AG finishers, women and elderly
7.15. AG in accordance with finishing time, app 250 - 300 in each group
...
...
8.05 Relays

You will have more info in your start groups as we close registration app one month before the race

The expected finishing time is used to divide the start groups so that the participants are at the same level. This gives a more safe race, since the level over overtaking will be reduced..

All the best

Hi Challenge,

I am having some trouble seeing the point of using expected finishing time to account for less overtaking. example

2 persons will finish in 10 hours

1. person:
Swim: 1 hour 20 minutes
Bike: 5 hours 15 minutes
Run: 3 hours 25 minutes

2. person :
Swim: 1 Hour
Bike: 5 hours 45 minutes
Run: 3 Hours 15 minutes

An add on question is, how do you then compete against your own category. There is no way of telling if a competitor started before or after you when you sprint up the finish line against them( or walk or crawl or whatever is possible after so many hours).

Best regards,
Sune

If slower athletes start before faster you will have a problem with overtaking and
it starts in the water!
How can I have an active competition with fellow age groupers if we do not start at the same time???

Hi again

Of course there will be exceptions to the rule and your examples are all true, but we know from our own experience and from races around Europe that this way to divide the Age Groups is by far the best and most fair.

TIP
Hi Challenge,

The swim is the disciplins where passing slower competitors is the hardest, especially if they're doing breast stroke - which slower and elderly swimmers tend to do fall back on when getting tired.

An ironman distance triathlon is firstly a competition against yourself, secondly against your AG and lastly against everyone else. Therefore it should be possible, at all times to have a general idea of ones position in the AG and I don't see how that's possible if the AG are mixed.

Also the first 1-2 waves to be sent off after the slow and elderly will spend much more energy in the water overtaking than the rest, giving them a disadvantage at a later state in the race, when energy used up is... well used up.

Maybe you should ask the pro's if they'd like to start mixed among the AG after the slow and elderly.... I think you'd get much the same respons from them as you are from us.

I know the expected swim time differs as much as the expected finish time and as such it's hard to accommodate everyones wishes. However the majority of people can accept starting together with ones AG despite swim and finish times. Why not acknowledge that?

There's 1600 starters. Sending off 400 every 5 mins, means your're never 10-15 mins from the rest of your age group. In the grand scheme of things that's not much difference.
